Albuquerque sits about a mile above sea level on the Rio Grande, with the Sandia Mountains along its east side and a stretch of old Route 66 running straight through the middle of it. Is Albuquerque the same as Santa Fe?
No. Santa Fe is the state capital, about an hour north by car or by the Rail Runner train. Albuquerque is the larger city and has the main airport, the Sunport.
What is the Balloon Fiesta?
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a hot-air balloon event held every October at Balloon Fiesta Park on the north side of the city. Hotels across the city fill for it, so book well ahead.
What does red or green mean?
It is New Mexico’s official state question: whether you want red chile or green chile on your food. Say Christmas and you get both.
